Whitby martial-arts academy is made up of enthusiastic martial-artists that are willing to explore all elements of marital-arts. We have many senior members with different martial-art backgrounds which we refer to and experiment with.

No style is perfect!
This is because there’s just too much to incorporate. If a style focus’s on just one thing it becomes super good at it but is very weak at others aspects of martial-arts e.g. boxing, no style, punches hardest of all arts, but get them on the ground or start kicking and the style becomes weak! But if someone trains every aspect of martial-arts such as ground fighting, punching, kicking, grappling etc. they have a really good rounded weapon when fighting untrained combatants, but if fighting a specialist in there chosen field they we probably be beat (if abiding by rules!). So what to do!

Make Martial-arts suit you, you don’t suit martial arts.
At Whitby martial-arts academy we try and tailor the combined knowledge of all our senior members (check out our club structure) to suit you. If we do something that you don’t like or doesn’t work don’t worry about it, it’s not for you. Not everything works for everyone, strength and size can be big factors in the reason something won’t work. If your 4.5ft we can teach variations of a technique that works great for a 6.5ft person, it may look totally different but would be the same principle!

Our aim is to give you something you can use in all situations in life from the right arm lock to restrain an assailant to the confidence to comfortable speak in front of a crowd. No matter what your physical ability, size, age or sex we aim to give you the ability and confidence to defend yourself.

Our Style
Our main style is chuan-shu kwoon (maybe be spelt totally wrong). It’s a form of kung-fu. It’s very basic and to the point, the idea is that if it’s complicated, when it comes to the crunch it has a lot of room for error. We try to eliminate the impractical bits in techniques like kicking above waist, spinning etc.

We have sub styles that we incorporate into our style. We draw in knowledge from judo, karate, jujitsu, tai chi, wing-chun, bag wa etc. because as I said earlier no style is perfect so by “borrowing” from others we can hopefully find a perfect system for you which will be different to a perfect system for someone else.
